Surviving gay conversion therapy

Garrard Conley grew up in a fundamentalist Christian family and was sent to a gay conversion camp in a bid to rid himself of homosexuality.

Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian family in America’s Bible Belt, Garrard Conley had doubts about his sexuality but had to hide it from his community and family, especially his father who was a pastor. When Garrard was at university, he was outed, and his parents felt they had no choice but to send him to a gay conversion therapy camp in a bid to β€˜cure’ him of homosexuality. Garrard was soon desperate to leave. Help would come from an unlikely place. (A longer version of this interview was first broadcast in June 2018)
