Black and Jewish in the US

We look at Black Jewish lived experiences in the US, reflecting Black Lives Matter.

β€œThroughout my life I’ve been attacked by Orthodox Jews, African-Americans and white people. Since the George Floyd protests racial tension is on the rise, the KKK has been harassing people in my neighbourhood since last Wednesday. It’s a lot” – Isaac, 21, Ethiopian Jew in North Carolina USA.
As a wave of protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd on the 25th of May, 2020, the Black Lives Matter Movement rose to significant prominence across the United States and then other parts of the world such as Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. As these protests started to consume everyone’s lips and thoughts, presenter Amie Leibowitz thought about the varied faces within her own, wider Jewish community. She came to the realisation that she had never met anyone that identified as Black and Jewish until after university – that was 4 years ago. In fact, she didn’t learn a lot about a non-Ashkenazi, Eastern European Jewish history and culture until university.
This Heart and Soul episode is about Black Jewish lived experiences in the United States, reflecting upon the narratives of those impacted by their origins and beliefs leading up to and during the Black Lives Matter Movement as founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer.
