Ammara Brown
DJ Edu talks to Ammara Brown, a Zimbabwean singer using her voice to speak out on painful and difficult subjects.
Ammara Brown is a big talent with a beautiful voice, and she is using that voice to speak out on painful and difficult subjects. She is the daughter of Zimbabwean star of the 1990s Andy Brown, and in this programme she talks to DJ Edu about the rich musical environment in which she grew up, but also the domestic violence she witnessed and the impact it has had upon her. Her powerful 2019 song Tichichema, which was accompanied by an uncompromisingly graphic video depicting a woman and child traumatised by a violent father, generated a huge response, with women fans feeling able to share their experiences, and some men saying it had prompted them to change their lives and behaviour.
