Andrey Kurkov: Creating Mysteries Across Time

From the splendour of St Sophia Cathedral to his nearby studio in central Kiev, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Olga Smirnova follows Ukrainian writer Andrey Kurkov as he researches his latest novel.

Andrey Kurkov is one of Ukraine’s most famous and prolific writers. His novel Death and the Penguin is a worldwide best seller and his books are full of black humour and intrigue.

As Andrey starts on his, as yet untitled, 23rd novel, set between the 11th Century and the 1970s Soviet Union, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Olga Smirnova follows him from his studio in central Kiev to the calm of the capital’s St Sophia Cathedral, where he draws inspiration for this latest book.
Unusually Andrey will be collaborating with another Ukrainian writer who lives 500km away. We find out how this novel partnership is impacting his creativity.
