Cheese pies and jihadi brides

As the Islamic state group collapses, Russia has been repatriating the wives and children of I.S. fighters. Sarah Rainsford has been meeting them.

As the Islamic State group collapses, many countries are faced with the dilemma of what to do with the fighters’ wives and children. Since 2017, Russia has been bringing many of these women and their children back from Iraq and Syria. Sarah Rainsford went to the Russian republic of Dagestan to meet some of those who’ve come home.

Lucy Ash goes to Hungary to investigate the country’s public work scheme. The government created it back in 2010 to bring job seekers into the labour market. Unemployment plummeted and the Prime Minister Viktor Orban proclaimed the shift from welfare to workfare a great triumph, boasting that soon nobody would need to claim benefits because Hungary would achieve full employment. But is the scheme simply coralling people into working low paid, unskilled jobs?

Louise Dewast is in Burkina Faso, the country where it’s too dangerous to go to school. A surge in Islamist attacks has led to the closure of over 1000 schools, affecting more than 150,000 children in the capital. Just this week two teachers were kidnapped and killed. Our correspondent visits some of these empty schools and speaks to teachers about how insecurity is affecting Burkina Faso’s education system

Andy Jones saw how the village of Vik is making contingency plans in case its own volcano, Katla - already well overdue to blow - causes even more disturbance.
