Europe warns on China takeovers

The EU is advising governments to prevent companies being taken over by Chinese firms.

The EU is advising governments to prevent companies being taken over by Chinese firms. The warning from competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager comes as many firms' share prices have been hit by coronavirus. Javier Espinoza is a reporter with the Financial Times in Brussels and brings us the story. Also in the programme, producers and allies of the oil cartel Opec have agreed a record deal that will slash global output by about 10% after a slump in demand caused by coronavirus lockdowns. We ask clean energy consultant Michael Liebreich whether the demand for oil will ever recover. We hear from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Zoe Kleinman about so-called citizen supply chains, in which ordinary people are producing personal protective equipment to meet shortages for healthcare workers around the world, and also speak to Sam Lawrence, technology teacher at Cotham School in Bristol, about visors he has been producing with the help of some of his students. We have a report from County Clare on the west coast of Ireland about efforts by businesses there to keep visitors away. Plus, with the internet full of memes and videos to help us get through uncertain times, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Vivienne Nunis speaks to some of those creating internet content to make us smile during the long lockdown days.
