The challenge of packaging

We look at approaches to reducing the amount of waste in consumer driven societies.

We look at approaches to reducing the amount of waste in consumer driven societies. Richard Clapham of campaign group Recycle Now tells us that seasonal products in the run-up to Christmas pose a particular challenge. Illustrator Suzy Furse discusses her approach to minimising the environmental footprint of her business, which creates prints and cards from her artwork. Psychologist Dr Jo Glastone of the consumer behaviour unit at University College, London, argues most people need a big nudge to change their habits. We get a demonstration of a machine that can make a packaging box that fits the size of products to be packed, thereby saving waste. And Carry Somers of the pressure group Fashion Revolution says everyone should be buying less, and more wisely. Also in the programme, the Bank of England estimates that $5bn worth of investments have been pulled from Hong Kong since April due to ongoing political tension there. We hear about the implications from Nisha Gopalan, columnist for Bloomberg in Hong Kong. Plus on the 30th anniversary of the first broadcast of cartoon The Simpsons, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Elizabeth Hotson considers reasons for the show's longevity.
