Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaidó has dismissed warnings from President Nicolás Maduro the country's political crisis could spark civil war. Mr Guaidó has declared himself interim president and won support from major powers including the US. Mr Maduro said that whether there was war would depend on the "madness" of the US and its allies.

Two men are missing in the Australian city of Townsville, where thousands of homes have been flooded after unprecedented rainfall. Police say the men were last seen walking on a flooded street in the centre of the city – and a land and water search has been launched.

In the Somali capital Mogadishu, a car bomb exploded on Monday near a shopping centre, killing several people. And in Bosaso the head of Dubai-based P&O Ports was killed in what officials say was a targeted attack by the Somali militant group al-Shabab.
