Sub Lt George 'Jimmy' Green
Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Combined Operations
After joining the Royal Navyβs Fleet Air Arm in 1940, George Green was commissioned as a sub lieutenant in Combined Operations in 1942, taking part in the Dieppe raid in August that year.
Surviving the disastrous raid, Lt Green joined 551 Landing Craft Flotilla at Plymouth as Divisional Officer β a post that carried the nickname βJimmy the Oneβ. From then on George became Jimmy.
After some tough training Lt Green led the first wave of American Troops in to . Known as the suicide wave due to the high rate of casualties, none of the men from his landing craft survived.
After the war ended, Jimmy Green took a history degree, before entering the Army Education Corp where he served until retiring in 1976.
