Machu Picchu: Inca Gods and Human Sacrifices
The story of Juanita the Ice Maiden; one of the most famous mummies in the world who was offered up as an Inca child sacrifice.
In part 3 of this 4-part series, we find out about Juanita the Ice Maiden, one of the most famous mummies in the world. She was found in 1991 by anthropologist Johan Reinhard lying out in the sun on top of a dormant volcano in the Peruvian Andes. Found almost perfectly preserved, she was bludgeoned to death as a human sacrifice in the 15th century.
Dan is joined by Johan who tells the story of her discovery as well as a host of expert guests who give insight into what her last days would have been like as well as other Inca spiritual practices and death rituals….from speaking to oracles to keeping mummified family members in the house. And, while visiting the Andean Sanctuaries Museum in Peru to see Juanita, Dan is presented with an extraordinary request...
