Aspirations at the Academy - Tim
Tim is a student at the Deaf Academy. Might he become an MP and support his community?
So my name's Tim and I'm 20 years old and I'm at the Deaf Academy.
We wanted to talk about your aspirations. So when I say the word aspirations, what comes to your mind?
I'd like to be an MP, but I don't know, I don't know.
Where has this idea come from?
So a while ago I was talking to somebody from the council and we asked them, they came and visited and we asked them lots and lots of questions and the idea came from there. Also, we went to the House of Commons in London as well, so I kind of got the bug there. It was a really amazing day.
You could be an MP, what sorts of things would you do? What kinds of things would you change, perhaps?
I think I'd like to help the deaf community and to help empower the deaf community. You know, I'd like to make sure that there'll be a lot more access for people that use British Sign Language, because if deaf people can have more access, for example, access to interpreters, and when we've spoken to MPs before about this you know we've said that you know it's important that people have more access for example to interpreters so everybody in the deaf community has that access - you know has access to information, and I think the deaf community often miss out on so much important information because of that lack of access.
If you were an MP what do you think your life would be like?
Well, obviously the first thing I need to do is to make sure I'd have an interpreter with me all the time. Because if I don't have the interpreter there then, you know, I'm not going to be able to access, I'm not going to be able to hear what's going on. So that would be my priority. That would be the first thing I'd have to do. But if I was an MP in the Commons, yeah, I imagine I'd be attending a lot of meetings.
What would be your manifesto pledge? Your mission?
I think my manifesto would be to make sure that there's more access for the deaf community and deaf people and to make sure that there's more access to interpreters, particularly on television.
When can we expect you to be standing for election?
Who knows? But you never know when. Could be two, three years' time. I don't know. But also, I'd like to make sure that not only is there access for deaf people but also more access for disabled people. So, yeah, it's something for me, who knows?
