As Part of Black History Month 1Xtra once again celebrates its Future Figures. Future Figures is a way to recognise those members who are giving back to the Black community, and a time to celebrate the countless acts that are taking place up and down the country today by those who are helping to create the black history of tomorrow.
Tobi Kyeremateng is a BAFTA-winning film and TV producer based in London.
With a commitment to developing new talent and producing nuanced, thought-provoking, entertaining and fantastical stories across the diaspora through comedy, drama, documentary and moving image, Tobi has produced work internationally for Â鶹ԼÅÄ, BFI, British Vogue, Channel 4, Film4, i-D, Netflix, NOWNESS, Sky and more, including Channel 4 documentary Konan: Trapped In Trauma exploring the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Netflix documentary ÓWÀMBÈ looking at London’s Nigerian hall party culture, Sampha’s directorial debut film Lahai: Time Travels Memories, Julianknxx’s artist film Black Corporeal: Breathing By Numbers which screened at the COP27 and is voiced by Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah - an air pollution campaigner and mother of Ella Roberta Adoo-Kissi-Debrah who became the first person to have air pollution listed as a cause of death after she died in 2013 - and coming-of-age Channel 4 comedy-drama How To Be A Person which won Best Short Form Programme at the 2023 BAFTA Television Awards.
In 2018, Tobi created Black Ticket Project - an initiative set up to address the lack of accessibility to cultural spaces for working-class Black young people. Since then, over 100,000 free tickets to plays, musicals, concerts and exhibitions have been distributed.
In 2020, she was nominated by presenter Clara Amfo as a Next Gen Trailblazer in the Evening Standard, and in 2022 was included in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Europe list for Arts and Culture. In 2023, she received the Netflix New Talent Award at the Women In Film & TV Awards and was announced as a TV Collective Breakthrough Leader in 2024.
Tobi supports the next generation of artists as a mentor for London Screen Academy, Arts Emergency and Film London.
