As Part of Black History Month 1Xtra once again celebrates its Future Figures. Future Figures is a way to recognise those members who are giving back to the Black community, and a time to celebrate the countless acts that are taking place up and down the country today by those who are helping to create the black history of tomorrow.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is a professional footballer who has become one of the most iconic right-backs in the world, playing for Liverpool FC and the England national team. Born and raised in Liverpool, he has earned a reputation not only for his skills on the pitch but also for his leadership and commitment to positive change off the field.
One of Trent’s most impactful initiatives is The After Academy, a project designed to support young footballers who are released by football academies and may feel lost in their journey. With only a small percentage of academy players making it to the professional level, many talented individuals find themselves needing guidance on their next steps. The After Academy provides educational support, mental health resources, and career advice, helping these individuals transition into new opportunities.
For communities across the country, Trent’s efforts with The After Academy are particularly inspiring. His initiative emphasizes resilience, self-worth, and the importance of education, offering a pathway for young people to pursue fulfilling careers outside of football. As a young mixed athlete from a working-class background, Trent’s journey represents overcoming adversity, and his commitment to mentoring and giving back to those who may feel overlooked echoes his own experiences in the sports industry.
Trent realises that a small amount of time for him can mean the world of difference to someone else. He was raised in a family that always understood the importance of helping those wherever possible and despite his status in society he’s never forgotten those principles. As a proud son of Liverpool he is proud to give something back to the city that has given so much to him.
