‘I follow in the footsteps of women adventurers from history who were ignored’

Adventurer Lise Wortley on why she's recreating female explorers’ expeditions in costume.

Adventurer Lise Wortley joined Nuala McGovern in the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 4's Woman’s Hour studio recently – in a rather unusual 19th century hiking outfit, bonnet and all!

Lise (known online as Woman with Altitude) has spent the past few years following in the footsteps of female explorers of the past, recreating their expeditions.

It’s all about shining a light on the female adventurers she says have been ‘erased from the history books’, and she does the expeditions wearing replicas of the outfits they would have worn at the time.

Lise recently followed in the footsteps of Henriette d’Angeville, the first woman to climb Mont Blanc unaided in 1838. She attempted to follow the same route, but after two days in the mountains, was unable to reach the summit due to weather conditions.

Lise told Nuala why she was inspired to start this project and why she hopes it’ll encourage women to get outdoors and seek adventure in their own lives.

You can listen to the full interview on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sounds – it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 7 October.
