Everyone remembers the Euro 96 heartbreak. But as a manager, Gareth Southgate found success as head coach of England's U21s, before taking on the top senior job three years later.

Gareth Southgate wasn't always destined for a career in football... At school he got a number of GCSEs and could've gone on to do A-Levels before signing for Crystal Palace aged 16, where at one point his first manager told him to consider becoming a travel agent instead.

Luckily for fans of Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough though he stuck with it... and it's for his talent, attitude, discipline, versatility and reputation that he's earned respect from players and coaches alike at the top level.

Will heartbreak at Euro 96 always be the way he is remembered?

Since taking the reigns of the men's England side, it seems he's been on a mission to change his legacy...
