Officials say a Sudanese delegation was in Russia recently, aiming to conclude an agreement that would grant Moscow a naval base on the Red Sea.

Russia and Sudan have formally agreed to set up what they call " a logistical support point on the Red Sea". It will be Russia's first naval base in Africa.Β  Why does Russia need a naval base close to the Red Sea?
