Downtown dohyo: Discovering the New York front room turned sumo beya
How far would you move to change your life? How about your living room?
When times were tough, New Yorker James Grammer found solace in sport, in particular the ancient Japanese art of Sumo.
Initially there was nowhere local to compete - while the parks are fine in the summer, the traditional sumo loin cloth could be a bit chilly in winter. To navigate the problem weather, James turned his apartment into a beya - somewhere where Sumo wrestlers train.
He’s been telling Sportshour’s Caroline Barker how he found solace in an unlikely source.
