Paralympic champion campaigns to ensure no child misses out on PE in schools
Paralympian Hannah Cockroft joins campaign to involve more children in sport.
Hanah Cockroft has been speaking to 5 Live Breakfast’s Rachel Burden about a new campaign which aims to help involve and inspire children to take part in sport.
Â鶹ԼÅÄ Children's and Education, the Premier League and ParalympicsGB have launched Super Movers for Every Body.
It's a campaign aimed to engage disabled children and those with special educational needs in sport and physical activity.
The seven-time Paralympic champion says her own experience with PE in school involved watching others do a typical lesson while she sat in the corner doing her own physio exercises.
“That was over 20 years ago now and it breaks my heart that I’m still visiting schools and that’s still the same story because there’s no reason for it to be.â€
Currently 1.5 million children in England have special educational needs or are disabled, but only one in four disabled children take part in physical activity at school.
Super Movers for Every Body will release thousands of kits to schools, parents and carers.
A spokesperson from the Department for Education said: “We’re committed to playing our part in supporting all pupils to be physically active. Our cross-Government action plan on school sports was updated last year to encourage settings to offer all young people – including those with special educational needs – at least two hours of PE each week.
"We are also supporting schools to provide high quality PE and sport to children with special educational needs through new tools and resources delivered through our Inclusion 2024 grant. This includes a Hub which provides resources for teachers.â€
