EU bloc's support for Ukraine is 'unwavering'
High official of European Union calls for more capabilities to defend our interests and support Nato alliance.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has seen countries in Europe - as well as the United States - donate billions of dollars worth of weapons to Kyiv.
Two years in to the full scale invasion, the US has promised another $60 billion to Kyiv, but a split in Congress has meant a delay at best. Donald Trump - who could become US president again after November's election - has said he "will not give a penny" to Kyiv.
Weaponry in Ukraine is running short. European nations have offered another $50 billion to Kyiv. And they -- many of whom fear a Russian attack on their soil -- are being urged to develop a war economy.
Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, which represents the 27 European Union leaders, is already on the record as warning Europe if it wants peace, it "must prepare for war".
In a long and wide-ranging in depth interview with Newsday Mr Michel expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims of last week’s deadly attack on a Moscow concert hall that killed almost 140 people - but said it was regrettable that the Kremlin was trying to link the attack to Ukraine.
"For two years Russia has systematically tried to use all possible tools to fuel the conflict and legitimise its war with Ukraine. But we are not naΓ―ve, we are not impressed, we are not intimidated."
"In the United States it seems it's difficult for President Biden... to convince Congress to mobilise more money for Ukraine. In the EU, despite requiring unanimity... we are doing it. We have to do more."
"We are supporting Ukraine in the long term."
