Senegal presidential election: “a victory for democratsâ€
Senegal's former Prime Minister, Aminata Toure, was once Macky Sall’s Prime Minister, before becoming one of his biggest critics. She has been supporting the opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the country's presidential election. She told Newsday's James Copnall on Sunday night that the election was 'a victory for all Senegal's democrats no matter for who you may have voted for.' She said President Macky Sall tarnished the country's reputation and it now needs to 'cement the shaken foundation of our democracy starting by reducing the power of the president so we don't end up in an autocratic situation again.' She thinks Mr Faye, a frontrunner in the election will have a lot of ambition for the country: 'he will fight corruption, will work for more independence of the justice system and then he will put the whole issue of youth and employment at the centre of his programme.'
