Rare Temple Sowerby shell collection saved from skip
A historically important 18th century collection of rare sea shells from around the world, goes on display at Chesters Roman Fort and Museum. They were collected by Bridget Atkinson who was a farmer and a mother of ten children who was incredibly well connected, and called in favours from around the globe to add to her valuable stash of shells. Remarkably they were saved from a skip by a Newcastle University lecturer in the 1980s. Image - English Heritage
