Haiti has declared a 72-hour state of emergency and night curfew in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince, because of two jailbreaks and spiralling insecurity. At least a dozen people died as gang members attacked the main prison in the city, triggering breakouts by several thousand inmates. Gang leaders who it is thought control around 80% of Port-au-Prince say they want to force the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is outside the country. The former Prime Minister Claude Joseph who is now head of the opposition party Those Committed to Development, told Newsday that ''it's a nightmare in Haiti and it's unfortunate that criminals are using violent means forcing Henry to stand down.'' He said '' Haiti needs better leadership with people who respect their word and that can lead to elections.'' Claude Joseph is among 51 people indicted over the assassination of the former president, Jovenel MoΓ―se in 2021, something he denies.
