Muncaster Castle secret WWII home to evacuated art

Sunflowers by van Gogh and other famous masterpieces safely sat out the war in Cumbria away from the Blitz. The Tate Art Gallery in London housed some of the most valuable art works in the world, and at the outset of hostilities plans were drawn up to send some of them up here for safe keeping, so future generations could enjoy them.
