Iran blamed for drone strike on US base

The United States has blamed Iranian-backed militant groups for a deadly drone attack on an American base in north-eastern Jordan, near the Syrian and Iraqi borders.

President Joe Biden said the US would respond at a time and manner of its choosing following the incident, which killed three service personnel and injured 34 others.

Iran has denied involvement, calling the accusation political.

Malcolm Nance is a former US intelligence officer. He said the base, called Tower 22, is β€œright on the Jordanian, Iraq, Syrian tri-border axis” and β€œis one of several very small US micro-outposts that were established during the war on terrorism”.

He told Newsday: β€œThe Iranians and their proxies have carried out over 160 attacks on US assets and resources throughout the region…and this is the one that finally got through.”
