'This will be a coronation' for former president
The former US president Donald Trump has won a key Republican party primary election to be their presidential candidate again.
Donald Trump is projected to win the New Hampshire Republican primaries as he seeks the party's US presidential election nomination.
With most votes counted he has 54 per cent, with his last remaining rival, the former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, winning 44 per cent. Ambassador Haley - who had focused her campaigning in New Hampshire - has vowed to stay in no matter the result, with her team saying it will not be a Trump coronation.
President Joe Biden - who's standing for re-election for the Democrats - says it's clear Mr Trump will be the Republican presidential candidate.
Newsday asked Shannon Felton Spence - a political strategist at the Harvard University think tank, the Belfer Center - whether this was a definitive win for the Trump campaign.
"He has all but secured the nomination. It's been since 1976.... that one candidate has won Iowa [caucus] and also won New Hampshire [primary]. This is a coronation... and he will be the nominee by the summer time."
"Make no mistake the Democrats want the nominee to be Donald Trump."
