People in Ukrainian cities including the capital Kyiv woke up to the sounds of missiles as Russia launched a series of attacks, killing as least six people and injuring dozens more.

Ukrainian forces repelled some rockets but Kyiv's mayor said fires had broken out in different districts of the city.

In the western city of Kharkiv, near the front line with Russian-held territory and Ukraine's second city, the mayor confirmed several explosions in residential areas. Rescue workers have been trying to reach people trapped under rubble. Kharkiv's mayor said 30 residential buildings had been damaged.

Security analyst, Maria Avdeeva, told Newsday how it felt waking up to the sound of shelling in Kyiv where at least 20 people were injured.

"Russia is targeting civilians. Without these aid packages Ukraine will not be able to make it. You cannot underestimate the role of military aid; without that Ukraine won't be able to make it further. This is very crucial for us."
