The Importance of Being Elegant

The story of Congolese singer Papa Wemba, whose acolytes spend huge amounts on designer clothes to appear as conspicuously elegant as possible.

Congolese singer Papa Wemba is also a prominent figure in a Paris and Brussels-based cult known as La Sape, whose acolytes - many of whom are illegal immigrants - spend huge amounts on designer clothes in an effort to appear as conspicuously elegant as possible. Set to the strains of Wemba's music, this film follows him as he prepares for what's being touted as his last major concert.
