How much do consultant doctors really earn?
Consultant doctors in England have gone on strike to protect pay several times in recent months, and a loyal listener has asked whether it's misleading to repeat the widely quoted claim that their average salary is Β£120,000.
Billy Palmer, senior fellow in health policy at the Nuffield Trust, tells presenter Tim Harford that this figure isn't just their basic salary, but also includes extra payments for things such as Clinical Excellence Awards and anti-social hours.
He also reports that consultant doctors have seen their real-terms pay fall faster than almost anyone else over the past decade or so.
