Marina Abramović: ‘Most criticism is about nudity’
The ‘godmother of performance art’, Marina Abramović hit headlines last week for her art piece Imponderabilia, which invites visitors to move through a doorway between two nude performers.
She told Emma Barnett on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 4's Woman's Hour about the reaction she’s had to the artwork and why she feels it’s only younger generations that truly understand her show, which is currently running at the Royal Academy in London.
The piece was first staged in 1977 by Abramović and her then partner, Ulay. The pair stood close together in a doorway, compelling visitors to pass between them.
In this current show there is a separate entrance for those who are uncomfortable squeezing through the nude performers.
She also told Emma about why she thinks women gain more respect as they get older - and why she wants to keep creating art until she’s 103.
You can listen to the full interview on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sounds - it's the episode from 28 September.
