The triple lock system of calculating the state pension in the UK means it’s likely to rise by 8.5% in April. Under the policy, the payments increase in line with whichever of these three measures is highest - inflation, average earnings or 2.5%. Earnings - which are total pay, including bonuses - were recorded at 8.5% in September. But the increase has reignited a political debate over the fairness of the policy.
