Make A Difference Awards 2023: β€œVolunteer”

Meet the four finalists in our Volunteer category.

The four finalists in the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Essex Make A Difference Awards 2023 β€œVolunteer” category are (in alphabetical order):

Annie Arris, who works as a β€œLaughter Specialist”. She goes into hospitals, schools and hospices across Essex and uses comedy, magic and music to brighten the lives of youngsters in order to take their minds away from any sickness or medical issue they may be experiencing.

Carly Burd, who grows fruit and vegetables in her Harlow allotment and gives them to those in need in the town. Carly was nominated before her allotment was vandalised with salt – a story which made national headlines.

Winifred Hayward, who is 90 years old and still volunteers one day a week at her Southend branch shop for the Havens Hospice charity. Winifred says she would like to keep volunteering for many more years to come.

Glenys Vallis, who arranges groups such as β€œFundangles” to help those with dementia through music and dancing. She leads three support groups and four musical afternoons every month. Glenys says when it comes to people with dementia, β€œmusic helps to unlock memories they never knew they had”.

The four finalists will find out if they have won at the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Essex Make A Difference Awards ceremony on 21 September 2023. Good luck!
