2: Police charge an innocent man with murder
Ten days after Nikkiβs body was found police arrest an innocent man for her murder.
Innocent man George Heron lived in the same block of flats as Nikki and her family. He was questioned by police for three days before eventually making a βso-calledβ confession. At trial, the judge ruled his police interview tapes βinadmissibleβ and he was acquitted. In 2023, Northumbria issued a formal apology to Mr Heron.
