The home for women addicted to gambling

The charity GambleAware has found that the numbers of women receiving support for gambling addiction more than doubled between 2015 and 2021. So what's going on?

It’s a UK first – a women’s residential treatment centre, offering a safe space for those addicted to gambling. It's because the number of women receiving support for gambling addiction more than doubled between 2015 and 2021, according to figures from the charity GambleAware. The residential programme has been designed around women's needs. During their stay, they have limited access to phones, money and any online services, so that they can't gamble. But it also limits their exposure to their daily lives.

For 5 Minutes On, Rachel Stonehouse, reporter for Radio 1 Newsbeat, has been to spend a day there, hearing from some of the residents at the clinic run by the charity Gordon Moody, and from the women who are helping offer the treatment.
