President Biden visits Kyiv
The US leader reaffirmed his country's support for Ukraine, pledging more weapons for Kyiv and promising new sanctions for Russia.
'We are in this for the long run' - words of enormous reassurance for the people of Ukraine from the President of the United States. Joe Biden made a surprise visit to the capital, Kyiv, on the eve of the first anniversary of Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine. Mr. Biden and Ukraine's leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, appeared alongside each other in the city centre and later gave a joint address, in which Zelensky thanked Biden for the "unwavering" support his country had received from the US. President Biden said he would announce more critical equipment to Ukraine including a $500m weapons pledge. But as well as hardware, this historic visit sent a message - to the people of Ukraine, to Moscow and also to Americans - domestic political support for this is crucial. Zelensky said the negotiations between the two men had been very fruitful.
