The dark side of the Cloud
Panorama's Richard Bilton investigates the environmental impact of storing our data.
Online searches, streaming, storing photos - we use the Cloud all the time. But many of us don't realise that keeping all those cat videos, old emails and messages comes at a cost to the planet. The thousands of big storage centres which make up the Cloud and where millions of computer servers are kept are hungry for power and generate carbon emissions. Some scientists claim that one internet search alone uses as much energy as boiling a kettle.
