In the Caribbean country of Haiti armed gangs have taken over huge areas of the capital Port au Prince. Human rights groups say the gangs now control at least 60% of the city.

In just the month of October, the UN said there were 200 killings and a hundred kidnappings. And there is evidence that armed gangs are increasingly using rape as a weapon.

Violence has escalated since the assassination of the country’s President Jovenel Moise last year – a crime for which no one has been put on trial.

Outside Source spoke to two Haitians living abroad. They explain how they feel about their country's situation, how their families are and their hopes for Haiti's future:

"We haven't come to a point where we as Haitians realise the potential we have as a country to move forward."
