What is cystic acne?

It is estimated that 50 percent of women aged 20 to 29 have some type of acne – a skin condition that occurs when oil, bacteria and dead skin cells get trapped in pores; causing pimples and other irritations. On the other hand, cystic acne forms deeper in the skin, is more painful than normal acne and looks like large boils on the skin. This type of acne is sometimes tied to fluctuations in hormones especially in teenagers but can also affect adults. Many resort to home remedies in an effort to get rid of it. Such is the case for 24-year-old South African Lunathi Nokele who tried all sorts of home remedies for many years before seeing a dermatologist. She spoke to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Pauline Odhiambo on her journey to clearer skin.
