World Cup 2022: First woman refs at a men's tournament

Stephanie Frappart is the first woman to referee at a men's football World Cup. Hear the reactions from three women in the profession.

Stephanie Frappart is the first woman to referee at a men's World Cup, at Thursday's group-stage game between Costa Rica and Germany.

Frappart was joined by female assistant referees Brazil's Neuza Back and Mexican Karen Diaz Medina at Al Bayt Stadium, forming the first all-female on-field officiating team in the history of the tournament.

Frappart is one of three female referees selected to officiate in the tournament, with Rwanda's Salima Mukansanga and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan the other two women referees to be chosen.

Outside Source spoke to three other women who also work in the profession.

Olivia Brownlee is from Australia but now lives in the UK, and has been refereeing since she was a teenager, as has Molly Baxter from the UK.

Christine Enyonam-Ziga, Ghana's Chairperson of the Referees Committee, says of Frappart's appearance:

"It's a wonderful situation, it's a wonderful opportunity for Stephanie... I'm so excited about it."
