The farmer under siege by criminals

Thefts, vandalism and fly-tipping have forced Luke Palmer to take extraordinary measures to protect his 4,000 acre farm in Cambridgeshire.

Imagine spending two hours every day, securing and protecting your place of work to prevent crime. Well that’s exactly the situation Luke Palmer faces. He's a farmer in Cambridgeshire with around 4,000 acres to cover. Over the past year, he says there have been at least 30 crimes on his land. He reckons he’s constantly under threat and a target for organised crime gangs. He says he has little confidence left in the police. Luke Palmer now spends tens of thousands of pounds on electric barriers, CCTV and private security patrols. Cambridgeshire police say they want to work with Luke and arrange for officers to meet him. Ed Thomas, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Special Correspondent, has been looking into rural crime. He's found that last year suspects were almost 25% less likely to be charged than those in urban areas. In this episode of 5 Minutes On - he shares Luke's story.
