Rishi Sunak - The UK's first British Asian Prime Minister
Two years ago - as Hindus celebrated Diwali - the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Sima Kotecha was invited inside Number 11, to talk to the then Chancellor on a faith that gives him "strength and purpose".
After an extraordinarily turbulent time at Westminster - Rishi Sunak is to be Britain's next Prime Minister after winning the Conservative Party leadership contest. In a statement after being selected by Tory MPs, Mr Sunak said he would serve with "integrity" and "humility" - warning that the country faced "profound economic challenges".
He becomes the UK's first British Asian PM and at 42, the youngest leader in more than two centuries. He is extremely wealthy - featuring in the Sunday Times rich list - and has had an elite education - Winchester, Oxford and at Stanford in the US. Also striking, is that he came to public attention very recently - becoming Chancellor two and a half years ago, just before the pandemic. At this time - the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Sima Kotecha was invited inside Number 11 as Hindus across the country celebrated Diwali during lockdown. He spoke about his faith - and how it gives him "strength" and "purpose".
