A new radio play marking 50 years since the expulsion of British Asians from Uganda.
It's 1972. The President of Uganda, Idi Amin, has given Asian people living in the country 90 days to leave. Tens of thousands of people are forced to flee - many of them are British subjects and make their way to England to be housed in camps, including one at Greenham Common Airbase (in Berkshire).
The Newcomers follows the story of the Patels. A family, split from their father, evicted from their Ugandan home with just Β£50 and the clothes they stand in. They were forced to start over while facing mixed reactions from the local population as they battle to be reunited.
The story is told through the eyes of 15-year-old Jyoti. The Newcomers is a tale of bravery, resilience and hope.
Written by Pragna Hay and Beth Flintoff.
