Deadly gun attack at Russian school

A gunman opened fire at School 88, killing at least 17 people including 11 children.

A gunman, reportedly armed with two pistols, opened fire at a school in central Izhevsk. Russian officials say at least 17 people have been killed, and 24 injured.

The attacker - named as Artem Kazantsev, born in 1988 and a former pupil of the school - killed himself at the scene.

A video posted online by state investigators shows the body of the gunman, wearing a T-shirt with a Nazi symbol and a balaclava. Investigators are searching his place of residence.

This is a grim reminder of other school shootings in Russia in recent years. After the Kazan school and Perm University shootings in 2021 authorities toughened laws on guns. In this attack the gunman used pistols which he illegally obtained on the black market.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Russian's Sergey Goryashko gives an update on what we know so far: "Local officials and ministry of health say that this person had been suffering from schizophrenia... he had been frequenting his psychiatrist and still hadn't been put under surveillance."
