Uyghurs: Man separated from his family since 2017
The UN released a report on 1 September calling human rights abuses against Uyghurs by the Chinese authorities "credible".
Mamutjan is a member of the Chinese Uyghur community now living in Australia. In 2017, he was a student in Malaysia when he had to send his wife with their two small children back to China to renew her visa. He hasn't seen them since. "I just did not know that I had sent them back to a black hole that's going to appear over our heads," he says.
China maintains that it is not mistreating its Uyghur minority, calling the report a "farce" and for it to be dropped.
