How fire services saw the UK’s hottest day on record

Dave Walton from West Yorkshire’s Fire Service speaks to Sarah Montague

When Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton got home yesterday he and his partner, who also works in the fire service, both used the same phrase "what the hell just happened?"

He’d seen calls to around 200 fires but had just 300 firefighters able to respond - services in 15 areas around the UK had declared a major incident as record-breaking heat led to blazes that destroyed homes and crops.
