Two Britons and a Moroccan who were captured while fighting for Ukraine have been sentenced to death by a Russian proxy court in eastern Ukraine. Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, and Saaudun Brahim are accused of being mercenaries, Russian state media says. The court, which is not internationally recognised, is in the pro-Russian so-called Donetsk People's Republic. The UK and Ukraine have condemned the sentences for violating international laws protecting prisoners of war.

A friend of Saaudun Brahim, Muiz Avghonzoda, explains how they met and his reaction to the sentence. Muiz Avghonzoda described him as a fellow clubgoer and musician in Kyiv. He says he joined the Ukrainian army to be able to contribute to the situation and gain some military experience, and is not a mercenary. He says he is fearful for his state of mind following the sentence as he has mental health issues.

"I hope I can see my friend again and talk to him."
