We are Just a Bunch of Misfits

Documentary exploring the ‘Misfits’ poets, a learning disabled poetry group.

Who are we? We are just a bunch of misfits talking nonsense, writing poetry and trying to make sense of the world.

This audio documentary explores the poetry of the ‘Misfits’, a Bristol theatre company led by people with learning difficulties. Centered on a series of online writing workshops with the Misfit’s Poetry group, we hear the voices of Dan, Beth and Katie, plus other members, as they explore the issues that concern them through their writing.

Dan reads ‘To Be A Man’, it’s a co-authored poem, but it’s become his signature piece. Inspired by a visit to an exhibition of work by Grayson Perry, the group wrote the poem in response to the work that explores many ways of expressing manliness. Dan says it was the custom pink Harley Davidson with a teddy bear that made a particular impression with the group. Hearing the poem, you get a real sense of the way the way the group support each other to find a unique take on everything that affects their lives. The groups current project is called ‘Lockdown Slug’ and focusses on all the once ridiculous things we now take for granted. Who would of thought people would need to stay apart by the width of car.

We also hear the voice of Anita, the group facilitator. Often the butt of the groups humour, she has created a space where the Misfits Poets can explore their reactions to the world around them and talk openly about their hopes, fears and dreams.
