DIY detectives - "Facebook solved my crime not the police"
As police response times get longer, and many less serious crimes aren’t investigated at all, DIY detectives are stepping in to solve crimes for themselves.
When police didn’t investigate the theft of her car, Michelle Almond decided to try to solve the crime herself. She’s one of a growing number of DIY detectives using social media and local surveillance to track criminals down.
A Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ investigation has found police forces in England and Wales are taking three minutes longer on average to attend serious crimes. Many less serious crimes are also not being investigated at all, and the number being solved has fallen for the last seven consecutive years.
For 5 Minutes On, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s special correspondent, Ed Thomas, spoke to Michelle about her experiences with the police, including how she was told to ask around for help on Facebook.
