Night Shift
Locked in a bathroom at a party, three friends fight over the safest way home.
NIGHT SHIFT is a comedy-drama about three old friends Millie, Jess, and Gemma. They are on the their first night out in a while at a house party for Jessβs work, but have locked themselves in the bathroom. Millie wants her one big night out of the month, Jess thinks Millie needs to go home and Gemma is hating every second. Each of them holds a secret they have come out tonight to finally tell each other, but is struggling to find the words, through Millieβs occasional vomit.
As the music gets louder, tongues get looser, and the βboringβ host Dan gets more annoyed, tensions rise in the bathroom. Millie drinks away the sorrows of her job and hopes to not be alone at the end of the night, much to Jessβs distress. Gemma is struggling to get over a past event she feels she cannot confess to career obsessed Jess, whom she has grown apart from. The night is not turning out to be the reunion they wanted. Can Jess rectify her friendships? Can Millie get over her need to drown it all out? Can Gemma move on? Although a cab and a bus is out, a long walk home could be what they all need.
NIGHT SHIFT takes a snap shot of the anxieties of young women today, based on real conversations with friends. In an age of fast technology, where there is an app for everything, why do many of us still feel unsafe or unhappy on a night out? As Millie, Jess, and Gemma show they just want to have fun, but do they have the right to party? Partly recorded in a bathroom, NIGHT SHIFT is a fun and revealing play about millennial life, going out, or staying in.
