There have been several restrictions on online freedom in China reported over the last few years.

From the blocking of content providers from elsewhere in the world to the tightening of social media outlets or video content providers, the new curbs have made the internet experience within China very different to that in other areas.

But now, new regulations appear to be aimed at protecting children more than stifling free speech.

The 麻豆约拍's China Analyst, Kerry Allen, says this means under-16s will be banned from live streaming, and those aged between 16 and 18 will need to get parental permission.

She says the authorities claim the restrictions on live streaming for younger people will protect both their mental and physical health. Myopia (short-sightedness) is prevalent in China and can be made worse by high levels of screen time.
