Solo traveller assault: 'It could have been me'

Following the story of Zainab Oladehinde, who alleges she was sexually assaulted whilst on holiday in Tanzania last year, another woman reflects on her own travelling experiences.

In a series of tweets that have been widely shared on social media, a young Nigerian woman, Zainab Oladehinde, alleges she was sexually assaulted whilst on holiday last year in Zanzibar, Tanzania. A woman from South Africa who regularly travels alone reflects on her thoughts when she saw the story. She says that she, sadly, was not surprised by the story, and recalls travelling in Indonesia when she was asked repeatedly whether she was travelling alone, and in the end, said she was meeting up with other people, even though that was not the case.

The hotel in Zanzibar where Zainab Oladehinde stayed has released a statement saying that they "take guests' safety and safety of single women travellers extremely seriously, as evidenced by six years of verified positive reviews from women all over the world." The hotel says the case was handed over to the police but Ms Oladehinde declined to take the case further.

Sadifa Juma, a district commissioner in charge of the area where the incident occurred told Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ that after being informed of the incident, the first thing he did was to relocate Zainab Oladehinde to a different hotel and provide her full time security during her stay. According to the Commissioner, the incident report by police was handed to the District Commissioner's Office and later forwarded to the Office of the Vice President where Zainab refused to proceed with the case.
